About DNG Format

DNG (Digital Negative) is an open RAW image format created by Adobe in 2004. It was designed as a universal, non-proprietary alternative to the hundreds of camera-specific RAW formats (CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, ORF, RW2, and others) that each camera manufacturer creates independently.

DNG stores the unprocessed data captured by the camera sensor — full bit depth (12-bit, 14-bit, or 16-bit), complete dynamic range, original white balance data, and lens correction metadata. This gives photographers maximum flexibility in post-processing, allowing adjustments to exposure, color temperature, and tonal curves without quality loss.

Many smartphones (Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy in Pro mode) and some cameras (Leica, Hasselblad, some Pentax models) shoot DNG natively. Adobe also provides a free DNG Converter for converting proprietary RAW files to DNG. However, DNG files cannot be viewed in web browsers, most email clients, or standard image viewers without RAW-capable software.

When to Convert From DNG

For sharing photos — DNG files cannot be viewed without RAW editing software. Convert DNG to JPG for universally viewable photos suitable for email, social media, messaging, and any device. JPG is 10–20× smaller than DNG.

For web publishing — browsers do not support DNG. Convert DNG to WebP or DNG to AVIF for optimized web images with the best quality-to-size ratio and improved Core Web Vitals scores.

For lossless archival — convert DNG to TIFF for a rendered lossless file at 16-bit depth, preserving maximum tonal detail for print workflows, stock photography, and long-term archival in a universally compatible format.

For transparent exports — convert DNG to PNG for lossless 8-bit images suitable for further editing in graphic design tools. PNG is universally supported across all editors and operating systems.

DNG Conversion: What to Expect

Converting DNG to a standard format renders the RAW sensor data into a visible image. The converter applies automatic processing — demosaicing, white balance, exposure normalization, and basic tone mapping — to produce a balanced, natural-looking result.

The rendered image represents the "default" interpretation of the RAW data, similar to what you would see opening the DNG in Lightroom before any manual adjustments. For creative edits (custom white balance, selective adjustments, advanced color grading), process the DNG in a RAW editor first, then export.

DNG files with embedded previews may convert faster, but the output is always rendered from the full RAW data for maximum quality. Explore all conversion options in our complete converter catalog.

DNG is a RAW format storing unprocessed sensor data with full dynamic range and 12–16 bit depth — ideal for post-processing. JPG is a compressed final image with 8-bit depth. DNG files are 10–20× larger but offer far more editing flexibility. Convert DNG to JPG for a shareable final image.
The converter renders DNG to the highest quality possible in the target format. TIFF at 16-bit preserves the most tonal detail. PNG provides lossless 8-bit output. JPG and WebP apply lossy compression but look excellent at high quality settings.
