About PSD Format
PSD (Photoshop Document) is Adobe Photoshop's native file format, introduced with the first version of Photoshop in 1990. PSD stores the complete state of an image editing project — layers, masks, adjustment layers, text, vector paths, blending modes, Smart Objects, and color profiles — all in a single file.
PSD supports RGB, CMYK, Lab, Grayscale, and Multichannel color modes with 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit depth per channel. The maximum canvas size is 30,000×30,000 pixels (PSB extends this to 300,000×300,000). PSD is the industry standard for graphic design, photo retouching, and digital art workflows.
The limitation is that PSD files are large, proprietary, and cannot be opened without Photoshop or compatible software. They are not viewable in browsers, email clients, or most standard image viewers — making conversion essential for sharing design work with anyone who does not have Photoshop installed.
When to Convert From PSD
For sharing designs — clients, stakeholders, and team members without Photoshop cannot open PSD files. Convert PSD to JPG for universally viewable photo comps, or PSD to PNG for designs with transparent backgrounds.
For web publishing — PSD files cannot be used on websites. Convert PSD to WebP or PSD to AVIF for optimized web images with the smallest possible file sizes and best Core Web Vitals scores.
For print preparation — while print shops accept PSD, many workflows prefer PSD to TIFF for its simplicity and broad compatibility across prepress systems. TIFF preserves full quality without Photoshop-specific layer data.
For quick previews — convert PSD to JPG to create lightweight previews of design files for email attachments, project management tools, or client review portals.
PSD Conversion: What to Expect
When converting PSD to a raster format, all layers are flattened into a single image. Layer effects, blending modes, masks, and adjustments are composited into the final result — exactly as you would see the image in Photoshop with all layers visible.
Transparent areas in PSD are preserved when converting to formats that support transparency: PNG, WebP, AVIF, and TIFF. When converting to JPG or BMP, transparent areas are filled with white.
Note that individual layer extraction is not supported — the converter produces a flattened composite. For layer-by-layer export, use Photoshop or a compatible editor. Explore all conversion options in our complete converter catalog.
