Why ToFormat?
Superior Compression
HEIF shrinks ICO files dramatically – up to 50% smaller than PNG at equivalent quality. Perfect for websites, apps, and archiving.
Transparency Preserved
ICO icons often include alpha transparency. HEIF supports full 8/10/12‑bit alpha, so your icons keep their transparent backgrounds flawlessly.
Batch Conversion
Upload up to 20 ICO files at once. Choose which size to convert from multi‑size ICOs. We'll package all HEIFs in a ZIP.
About the Formats
🖍️ What is ICO?
ICO (Icon) is the native icon format for Windows. It can contain multiple images of different sizes and color depths (including 1‑bit, 4‑bit, 8‑bit, 24‑bit, 32‑bit with alpha). ICO files are used for program icons, favicons, and file type associations.

HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is a modern container format developed by MPEG. It uses HEVC (H.265) compression to achieve about half the file size of JPEG at the same quality. HEIF supports animations, HDR, transparency, depth maps, and burst photos. It's the default format for Apple devices (iOS 11+) and is gaining web support.

💡 Pro Tips
- Use lossy HEIF for icons with photos or gradients – quality 85% gives excellent results with minimal size.
- For icons with sharp edges and transparency, lossless HEIF preserves every pixel while compressing better than PNG.
- If your ICO contains multiple sizes, select the largest size (usually 256×256) for best quality, or convert all sizes separately.
- HEIF supports HDR and wide color gamut – if your icon uses those, enable HDR mode.
- Convert in batch mode – upload multiple ICOs and download all HEIFs as a ZIP archive. Great for icon sets.
- We strip metadata by default for privacy. ICO rarely contains EXIF, but any present is removed.
- HEIF does not support animation (unlike HEIF sequences). For animated icons, consider GIF or WebP.
How ICO to HEIF Conversion Works
ICO files often contain multiple images at different sizes and color depths. When converting to HEIF, you typically extract a single image (usually the largest). Our server decodes the chosen ICO image to raw pixels, then encodes it as HEIF with your selected quality settings. HEIF uses the HEVC codec to achieve outstanding compression while preserving detail and transparency.
All processing is done in memory, and your files are permanently deleted after 10 minutes.
ICO vs HEIF: Key Differences
Purpose: ICO is for Windows icons; HEIF is a modern universal image format.
Multi-size: ICO stores multiple resolutions; HEIF stores one image per file (but can contain image sequences).
Compression: ICO may be uncompressed or use PNG; HEIF offers superior lossy/lossless compression (up to 50% smaller).
Transparency: Both support alpha – ICO via 32‑bit, HEIF via full alpha channel.
Use cases: ICO for Windows shortcuts/favicons; HEIF for websites, apps, and storage.
When to Convert ICO to HEIF
Convert ICO to HEIF when you need a modern, space‑efficient format for web or app development. HEIF files are significantly smaller, load faster, and are supported by all modern browsers and Apple devices. Keep the original ICO for legacy Windows compatibility (e.g., favicon.ico for older browsers).
