WebP is supported by Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Opera — covering over 97% of global browser usage. The safest modern format for web images today.
25–35% Smaller Than JPG
WebP delivers significantly better compression than JPG and PNG. Photos shrink by 25–35%, and transparent graphics become 50–70% smaller than PNG — without visible quality loss.
Lossy, Lossless & Transparency
WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, plus full alpha channel transparency. One format for photos, graphics, logos, and overlays.
Batch Processing
Convert up to 20 files at once. Upload, choose format, adjust quality — download all results in seconds. Files auto-delete after 10 minutes.
About WebP Format
WebP is an image format developed by Google in 2010, designed specifically for the web. It uses advanced compression based on the VP8 (lossy) and VP8L (lossless) video codecs to deliver smaller files than both JPG and PNG while maintaining comparable visual quality.
WebP supports three compression modes: lossy (like JPG but 25–35% smaller), lossless (like PNG but 26% smaller on average), and transparency (alpha channel with both lossy and lossless, far more efficient than PNG). It also supports animation as a modern alternative to GIF.
With over 97% global browser support in 2025 — including Safari since version 16 — WebP has become the de facto standard for optimized web images. Google PageSpeed Insights actively recommends serving images in WebP or AVIF format for better Core Web Vitals scores.
When to Convert To WebP
For web optimization — converting JPG to WebP cuts file size by 25–35% with no visible quality difference. Converting PNG to WebP saves even more — 50–70% for transparent graphics while preserving alpha channel.
For universal modern support — WebP works in every major browser since 2023. Unlike AVIF (93% support), WebP at 97%+ is safe to use without fallbacks for most audiences.
For animated images — WebP animation is far more efficient than GIF. Convert GIF to WebP for smaller animated images with better color depth and transparency support.
For balanced performance — WebP encoding is fast (unlike AVIF which is computationally expensive). Ideal for real-time conversion pipelines, CDNs, and dynamic image serving.
When to Convert From WebP
Despite WebP's advantages, there are valid reasons to convert away from it. Convert WebP to JPG when sharing images with users on legacy systems or apps that still lack WebP support — email clients, older document editors, and some social media platforms handle JPG more reliably.
Convert WebP to PNG when you need a lossless copy for editing in professional tools, print workflows, or archival purposes. PNG's universal compatibility in desktop applications makes it the safer choice for non-web use.
For cutting-edge compression, convert WebP to AVIF — AVIF is 20–30% more efficient than WebP for photographic content, though with slower encoding and slightly lower browser support. See all options in our full converter catalog.
