Why ToFormat?
Animation Ready
GIF supports simple animations. If your ICO contains multiple images (e.g., different sizes), you can combine them into an animated GIF.
Transparency Support
ICO icons often include alpha transparency. GIF supports binary transparency – we can set a specific color to become transparent, preserving the icon's shape.
Batch Conversion
Upload up to 20 ICO files at once. We'll convert each to GIF (choose a size per file or use the largest) and package in a ZIP.
About the Formats
🖍️ What is ICO?
ICO (Icon) is the native icon format for Windows. It can contain multiple images of different sizes and color depths (including 1‑bit, 4‑bit, 8‑bit, 24‑bit, 32‑bit with alpha). ICO files are used for program icons, favicons, and file type associations.

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) was created by CompuServe in 1987. It uses indexed colors (max 256), LZW lossless compression, supports animation and simple transparency (1‑bit). GIF is ideal for graphics with few colors, animations, and memes, but not suitable for photos due to palette limits.

💡 Pro Tips
- For static icons, reduce the palette to 16–64 colors – file size drops with minimal visual difference.
- Use dithering (Floyd‑Steinberg) to simulate more colors when reducing to 256 colors.
- When creating an animated GIF, set a reasonable frame delay (5–10 cs) for smooth playback.
- GIF transparency is binary – each pixel is either fully transparent or opaque. Choose a color key wisely.
- Convert in batch mode – upload multiple ICOs and download all GIFs as a ZIP archive.
- We strip metadata by default. ICO rarely contains EXIF, but any present is removed.
- If your ICO contains photographic content, GIF will look posterized. Use JPG or WebP instead.
How ICO to GIF Conversion Works
ICO files can store multiple images at different sizes and bit depths. When converting to GIF, you typically extract a single image (usually the largest) or combine multiple ICOs into an animation. Our server decodes the chosen ICO image(s) to raw pixels, quantizes colors to the selected palette (max 256), optionally applies dithering, and encodes as GIF. For animations, we combine frames with timing information.
All processing is done in memory, and your files are permanently deleted after 10 minutes.
ICO vs GIF: Key Differences
Color depth: ICO can have 24‑bit color plus alpha; GIF is limited to 256 colors from a 24‑bit palette.
Transparency: ICO supports full 8‑bit alpha (32‑bit mode); GIF offers 1‑bit transparency (on/off).
Animation: ICO does not support animation; GIF supports multi‑frame animation.
Use cases: ICO for Windows icons; GIF for web graphics, memes, and simple animations.
When to Convert ICO to GIF
Convert ICO to GIF when you need a universally compatible, animated version of your icon – for websites, emails, or social media. GIFs are small, easy to share, and work everywhere. For static icons with few colors, GIF is also a lightweight option. Keep the original ICO for high‑quality editing or Windows compatibility.
Our GIF to ICO converter lets you go back to ICO when needed (note that color information lost in GIF cannot be recovered).
