Why ToFormat?
Lightning-Fast Encoding
QOI encodes and decodes 20–50× faster than PNG with comparable file sizes. Designed for real-time applications where every millisecond counts — game asset pipelines, embedded systems, and streaming.
Lossless Quality
QOI uses lossless compression — every pixel is preserved exactly. No artifacts, no degradation, no matter how many times the file is saved. Comparable quality to PNG at similar file sizes.
Batch Processing
Upload up to 20 QOI files at once. Convert entire collections between QOI and standard formats in seconds — perfect for asset pipeline workflows.
Fast & Secure
Instant server-side conversion with automatic file deletion within 10 minutes. No registration, no watermarks, no data collection.
About QOI Format
QOI (Quite OK Image Format) was created by Dominic Szablewski in 2021. It is a lossless image format designed with a radically simple goal: achieve PNG-like compression with dramatically faster encoding and decoding speed. The entire QOI specification fits on a single page, and a complete encoder/decoder can be implemented in about 300 lines of code.
QOI supports 24-bit RGB and 32-bit RGBA (with alpha channel transparency), using a combination of run-length encoding, indexing, difference encoding, and luma encoding. QOI files are typically within 10–20% of PNG file size — sometimes smaller, sometimes larger depending on image content — but encode and decode 20–50× faster.
QOI has gained popularity in game development, embedded systems, real-time graphics, and scenarios where encoding/decoding speed matters more than maximum compression. However, QOI is not supported by web browsers, major image editors, or operating system image viewers — making conversion necessary for standard use. For web images, WebP and AVIF offer far better compression, while PNG remains the universal lossless standard.
When to Convert From QOI
For web and sharing — QOI is not supported by any browser or standard image viewer. Convert QOI to PNG for universal lossless compatibility, or QOI to JPG for smaller photos suitable for email and social media.
For optimized web assets — convert QOI to WebP or QOI to AVIF for dramatically smaller web images. WebP and AVIF achieve 50–80% better compression than QOI for photographic content.
For print workflows — convert QOI to TIFF for professional print-ready files with CMYK support and embedded color profiles that QOI cannot store.
For editing — convert QOI to PNG for seamless compatibility with every image editor — Photoshop, GIMP, Figma, and all design tools support PNG natively.
When to Convert To QOI
QOI shines in real-time and performance-critical pipelines. Convert PNG to QOI or JPG to QOI when you need lossless images that encode and decode in microseconds — game asset loading, embedded displays, real-time streaming, and automated testing pipelines.
QOI is also useful as an intermediate format in image processing chains where speed matters more than file size. Its simplicity makes it easy to integrate into custom tools and minimal environments without complex library dependencies.
For archival or distribution, PNG is a better lossless choice due to universal support and slightly better compression. For web delivery, WebP or AVIF are far more efficient. Use QOI when decoding speed is the primary concern. Explore all options in our complete converter catalog.
