Why ToFormat?

Game Dev Standard

TGA (Targa) is a staple texture format in game development, 3D modeling, and VFX pipelines. Convert TGA textures to modern formats for web, or convert images to TGA for engine-compatible assets.

🎨

Alpha Channel Support

TGA supports 32-bit color with full 8-bit alpha channel transparency — essential for game textures with transparent regions, particle effects, and UI elements.

🔒

Batch Processing

Upload up to 20 TGA files at once — ideal for converting entire texture sets or sprite sheets. Choose output format, download everything in one go.

Fast & Secure

Instant server-side conversion with automatic file deletion within 10 minutes. No registration, no watermarks, no data collection.

About TGA Format

TGA (Truevision TGA, also known as TARGA — Truevision Advanced Raster Graphics Adapter) was created by Truevision Inc. in 1984. Originally designed for their video graphics cards, TGA became one of the first widely used formats to support 24-bit true color and 32-bit color with an 8-bit alpha channel.

TGA stores images as uncompressed or RLE-compressed pixel data, supporting 8-bit (256 colors), 16-bit (high color), 24-bit (16.7 million colors), and 32-bit (with alpha transparency) color depths. The format is simple, well-documented, and has no patent restrictions — factors that made it a long-standing standard in game development and 3D graphics.

TGA remains widely used in game engines (Unreal Engine, Unity, Source Engine), 3D modeling tools (Blender, Maya, 3ds Max), and VFX pipelines. However, TGA files are large (no efficient compression), not supported by web browsers, and largely obsolete outside of game dev and legacy workflows. Modern alternatives include PNG for lossless transparency and WebP or AVIF for web-optimized images.

When to Convert From TGA

For web and sharing — TGA is not supported by browsers or standard image viewers. Convert TGA to JPG for universally viewable photos, or TGA to PNG for lossless images with transparency preserved.

For optimized web assets — game studios publishing web content need smaller files. Convert TGA to WebP or TGA to AVIF for dramatically smaller images with excellent quality and transparency support.

For print workflows — convert TGA to TIFF for professional print-ready files with full color depth and ICC profile support that TGA lacks.

For portfolio and documentation — convert TGA to JPG or TGA to PNG to create viewable screenshots of textures for ArtStation, design docs, or asset catalogs.

When to Convert To TGA

TGA is still required in specific game development and 3D workflows. Convert JPG to TGA or PNG to TGA when game engines, mod tools, or legacy 3D software require TGA format for texture assets, skyboxes, or UI sprites.

The Source Engine (Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Garry's Mod), many older Unreal Engine projects, and some modding communities specifically require TGA textures. Convert from modern formats when contributing to these ecosystems.

For most new projects, PNG is a more efficient lossless alternative with smaller file sizes and broader tool support. Use TGA only when specific software or pipeline requirements demand it. Explore all options in our complete converter catalog.

Frequently Asked Questions

TGA (Truevision TGA, also called TARGA) was created by Truevision Inc. in 1984. It is a raster image format widely used in game development, 3D modeling, and VFX pipelines for texture assets. TGA supports 32-bit color with full alpha channel transparency and optional RLE compression.
You can convert TGA to JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF, ICO, HEIF, and SVG. PNG is the most common choice for preserving quality and transparency.
Yes — TGA remains common in game engines like Source Engine (Half-Life, Counter-Strike), older Unreal Engine projects, and many modding communities. However, modern engines increasingly prefer PNG or compressed formats. TGA is primarily used for legacy compatibility.
Yes — TGA supports full 8-bit alpha channel transparency in 32-bit mode. When converting to formats that support transparency (PNG, WebP, AVIF), the alpha channel is preserved. Converting to JPG fills transparent areas with white.
TGA files are typically stored uncompressed, recording every pixel individually. Even with optional RLE compression, TGA is much larger than modern formats. Convert to PNG for a lossless alternative that is 50–80% smaller, or to WebP/AVIF for even greater savings.
PNG is better for most modern game projects — it offers lossless compression (smaller files), full transparency, and wider tool support. TGA is preferred only when a specific engine, mod tool, or pipeline requires it. Check your engine's documentation for recommended texture formats.
All files are processed on secure servers and automatically deleted within 10 minutes. We never store, view, or share your files. No account or registration required.
Yes. Upload up to 20 TGA files simultaneously — perfect for batch-converting texture sets. Select an output format, adjust quality, and download everything in a single batch.
