Why ToFormat?
Lossless Quality
PNG preserves every pixel without the compression artifacts JPG introduces. Re-save as many times as you want — zero quality degradation, ever.
Full Alpha Transparency
PNG supports smooth 8-bit alpha channel — semi-transparent edges, gradient opacity, and clean overlays on any background. JPG can't do this.
Fast & Private
Files are processed on secure servers and automatically deleted within 10 minutes. No registration, no watermarks.
About the Formats
📸 What is JPG (JPEG)?
JPG is the web's most popular photo format, created in 1992. It uses lossy DCT compression to achieve small files — typically 10:1 to 20:1 ratios. The trade-off: each save permanently discards image data, producing cumulative artifacts on edges, text, and flat-color areas.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) was created in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. It uses lossless deflate compression — no data is ever lost. PNG supports full 8-bit alpha transparency, 24-bit and 48-bit color, and is the standard format for screenshots, logos, UI elements, and any graphic where pixel-perfect quality matters.

When to Convert JPG to PNG
🎯 Logos & Branding
Convert logo photos to PNG for transparent backgrounds. Place your logo on any color, gradient, or image without the white box that JPG forces. PNG is the standard for brand assets.
💡 Need vector? Try PNG to SVG →📱 Screenshots & UI Design
PNG preserves the sharp edges of text, buttons, and interface elements that JPG blurs with DCT artifacts. Every design tool — Figma, Sketch, Photoshop — uses PNG as the default export for UI assets.
💡 Smaller web assets: try PNG to WebP →🖨️ Editing & Archival
Planning to edit an image multiple times? Convert to PNG first. Every JPG re-save degrades quality — PNG doesn't. PNG is lossless: edit, save, re-edit, save again — zero cumulative damage.
💡 Professional print: try JPG to TIFF →🌐 Web Overlays & Graphics
Create web graphics with smooth transparency — banners, watermarks, product cutouts, stickers, and overlays on dynamic backgrounds. PNG's alpha channel handles anti-aliased edges beautifully.
💡 Smaller transparent files: try JPG to WebP →Format Comparison
| Format | JPG | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy | Lossless |
| Transparency | No | Yes |
| File Size | Smaller | Larger |
PNG files are larger than JPG. For smaller web images, try JPG to WebP (25–35% smaller than PNG with transparency) or JPG to AVIF (50% smaller than JPG).
💡 Pro Tips
- PNG files are 5–10× larger than JPG for photographs. A 500 KB JPG may become 2–5 MB as PNG. Convert only when you need lossless quality or transparency — not for general photo storage.
- For web performance, consider WebP instead — WebP supports transparency like PNG but produces files 25–35% smaller. All modern browsers support WebP.
- Need the smallest possible file with modern quality? JPG to AVIF offers up to 50% better compression than JPG with transparency and HDR support.
- Converting JPG to PNG does not recover lost quality. PNG preserves exactly what the JPG contained — existing artifacts remain. The benefit is preventing any further degradation on re-save.
- PNG supports 48-bit color (16 bits per channel) for workflows that need deep color precision — scientific imaging, HDR photography editing, and color-critical print preparation.
- Need to go back to JPG? Use our PNG to JPG converter to reduce file size when transparency isn't needed. Transparent areas will become white (or a color you choose).
- For animated images, PNG won't work (APNG has limited support). Use GIF for email compatibility, or WebP which supports animation with transparency at smaller sizes.
How JPG to PNG Conversion Works
Converting JPG to PNG is one of the most common format transformations — and one of the most straightforward. JPG uses lossy DCT compression that permanently discards image data to achieve small files. PNG uses lossless deflate compression that preserves every pixel bit-for-bit.
When you upload a JPG, our converter fully decodes the compressed image data and re-encodes it as PNG with zero additional quality loss. The resulting PNG is visually identical to your JPG source — but from this point forward, re-saving will never degrade the image. This makes PNG ideal as an editing master: make changes, save, make more changes, save again — no cumulative compression damage.
Note that conversion cannot reverse JPG artifacts that already exist (blockiness, banding, color shifts). The PNG faithfully preserves whatever the JPG contained — for better or worse.
JPG vs PNG: Choosing the Right Format
Choose JPG when file size is the priority: sharing photos on social media, embedding in emails, storing large photo libraries, or serving web images where every kilobyte matters. A typical photograph is 5–10× smaller in JPG than in PNG.
Choose PNG when quality and transparency matter more than file size: logos, screenshots, UI mockups, design assets, text overlays, product cutouts, and any image you plan to edit repeatedly. PNG's lossless compression means zero quality loss regardless of how many times you save.
For the best of both worlds, modern formats offer compelling alternatives. WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression with transparency — files are 25–35% smaller than PNG. AVIF pushes compression even further with 10-bit color and HDR. For web projects in 2025, the optimal strategy is serving WebP/AVIF to modern browsers with JPG/PNG fallbacks.
PNG in Modern Web & Design Workflows
PNG remains the backbone of design workflows in 2025. Figma, Sketch, and Adobe XD export UI assets as PNG by default. App stores (Apple App Store, Google Play) require PNG for app icons and screenshots. Print-on-demand services accept PNG for products that need transparency — t-shirts, mugs, stickers.
On the web, PNG is the universal fallback when modern formats aren't available. While WebP and AVIF are preferred for performance, PNG remains essential for email clients (which don't support WebP), social media preview images, and any context where universal compatibility is non-negotiable.
